English Expressions

Learn five American English expressions that are related to the topic of this lesson.

• give up = to stop trying or quit
• let someone down = to disappoint someone
• blow it = to fail or make a big mistake
• give it your best shot = to try as hard as you can
• take the bull by the horns = to take control of a difficult situation

 

Exercise

Select the correct expression in the following conversation.

RONDA - I heard you started taking tennis lessons.

BILL - Yes. I've always wanted to learn to play tennis. My wife is an excellent tennis player but I really didn't know how to play very well. I finally decided to   gave up blew it let him down take the bull by the horns give it my best shot and enroll in a tennis class.  

RONDA - My husband and I took that tennis class last year. We even competed in an amateur tennis match. We played as partners.

BILL - How did you do?

RONDA - My husband played great but I   gave up blew it let him down take the bull by the horns give it my best shot . I kept missing the balls.  

BILL - Was he disappointed that you didn't win the competition?

RONDA - He pretended like it didn't matter but I think he really want to win. I think I   gave up blew it let him down take the bull by the horns give it my best shot .  

BILL - I'm not very coordinated but I'm going to try to learn to play. I'll   gave up blew it let him down take the bull by the horns give it my best shot .  

RONDA - Maybe you'll be a better player than me. I don't play anymore. I   gave up blew it let him down take the bull by the horns give it my best shot . Maybe you should be my husband's new tennis partner.
