First Aid Vocabulary

Emergencies
anaphylaxis
a very serious allergic reaction that can be life-threatening
bite
an injury caused by teeth or an animal’s mouth
bleeding
losing blood from the body
burn
an injury caused by heat, fire, or chemicals
choking
not being able to breathe because something blocks the throat
fracture
a broken bone
heart attack
a serious heart problem when blood cannot reach the heart
illness
a sickness or health problem (ill = sick)
injury
damage to the body caused by an accident or force
poisoning
becoming sick from a harmful substance (poison = harmful substance)
shock
a serious condition when the body does not get enough blood or oxygen
sprain
an injury to a ligament, usually caused by twisting
sting
an injury caused by an insect like a bee or wasp
strain
an injury to a muscle or tendon from stretching too much
stroke
a serious medical condition when blood flow to the brain stops
unconscious
not awake; unable to see, hear, or respond

an emergency method to help someone breathe and keep the heart working
emergency room
the hospital area for serious or urgent medical problems
rescue breathing
giving breaths to someone who is not breathing
elevate
to raise something to a higher position
