English Expressions

Learn five American English expressions that are related to the topic of this lesson.

• brush up on = to review something you already know
• give it your best shot = to try as hard as you can
• kick up your heels = to celebrate or have fun
• mix up = to confuse one thing with another
• take your time = to go slowly; not rush

 

Exercise

Select the correct expression in the following conversation.

NANCY - I heard that you're applying for a job as a city tour guide.

LIAM - Yes. I have a test next week on the history of the city. If I pass it, I'll get the job. I need to   brush up on give it my best shot kick up your heels mix up take your time my local history so that I'll be ready for the test.  

NANCY - You are great at history. I'm sure you'll do well.

LIAM - I'll   brush up on give it my best shot kick up your heels mix up take your time . All I can do is try.  

NANCY - Be sure to   brush up on give it my best shot kick up your heels mix up take your time in the test and answer the questions carefully.  

LIAM - I always   brush up on give it my best shot kick up your heels mix up take your time the years that different events took place. That's the hardest part of the test.  

NANCY - When you pass the test, you'll need to really   brush up on give it my best shot kick up your heels mix up take your time because that's a big achievement.
