English Expressions

Learn five American English expressions that are related to the topic of this lesson.

• on hand = available; easy to reach when needed
• An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. = It is better to prevent a problem than to fix it later.
• in time = early enough; before it is too late
• touch and go = very uncertain; not safe yet
• out of the woods = no longer in danger or trouble

Select the correct expression in the following conversation.

JESSICA - Did you hear about Bob?

WILLIAM - No. What happened?

JESSICA - He found out that he has coronary heart disease. His doctor said that he was lucky that they found out before he had a heart attack.

JESSICA - Yes.   on hand An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure in time touch and go out of the woods . It's better to take care of yourself now than to wait until there's a problem.
