English Expressions

Learn five American English expressions that are related to the topic of this lesson.

• for a song = for very little money; very cheap
• The early bird catches the worm. = people who act early have an advantage
• broke = having no money
• cut down on = to reduce how much you use or do something
• quite a bit = a lot; much

Select the correct expression in the following conversation.

GAIL - Did you go to the sale at the mall yesterday?

IRENE - No. Did you?

GAIL - Yes. It was a great sale. The stores are clearing out their summer clothes to get ready for fall. I bought summer clothes   broke for a song cut down on quite a bit The early bird catches the worm. .  

IRENE - When does the sale end?

IRENE - Yeah. We need to   broke for a song cut down on quite a bit The early bird catches the worm. expenses until we're done with the kitchen.  

GAIL - Remodeling costs   broke for a song cut down on quite a bit The early bird catches the worm. of money, doesn't it?  

IRENE - Yes, it does.
