This page: The pronunciation of the letters Z and S in English

To produce the sound of the letter S, the tongue moves close to the roof of the mouth, but does not touch it. The S is voiceless sound. We do not use our vocal cords to produce it. The letter S has the phonetic sound /s/. Click on the audio link below to listen to and repeat the sound.
To pronounce the letter Z, the tongue touches the roof of the mouth just like with the letter S. The difference between these two letters is that Z has a voiced sound (the vocal cords are used), while S is not. The letter Z has the phonetic sound of /z/.
