How is the letter S pronounced in English?

To produce the sound of the letter S, the tongue moves close to the roof of the mouth, but does not touch it. The S is voiceless sound. We do not use our vocal cords to produce it. The letter S has the phonetic sound /s/. Click on the audio link below to listen to and repeat the sound.

How do you pronounce the letter Z in English?

To pronounce the letter Z, the tongue touches the roof of the mouth just like with the letter S. The difference between these two letters is that Z has a voiced sound (the vocal cords are used), while S is not. The letter Z has the phonetic sound of /z/.
