English Expressions

Learn five American English expressions that are related to the topic of this lesson.

• make fun of = laugh at
• by heart = by memory
• mind your P's and Q's = be careful with your behavior
• face the music = accept the consequences
• had better = should

 

Exercise

Select the correct expression in the following conversation.

GRANDPA - When I was in school you had to behave. You really had to   make fun of by heart mind your P's and Q's face the music had better .  

GRANDDAUGHTER - Really?

GRANDPA - Yes, you had to follow the rules or   make fun of by heart mind your P's and Q's face the music had better .  

GRANDDAUGHTER - What did you have to do?

GRANDPA - We had to memorize a lot of information. You had to learn the lesson   make fun of by heart mind your P's and Q's face the music had better or you'd get in big trouble.  

GRANDDAUGHTER - What happened if you didn't learn it?

GRANDPA - Sometimes the other children would   make fun of by heart mind your P's and Q's face the music had better you if you couldn't remember it or the teacher would make you write on the board "I will study my lesson." twenty times.  

GRANDDAUGHTER - Then what happened.

GRANDPA - You   make fun of by heart mind your P's and Q's face the music had better learn the lesson by the next day or you'd get spanked.  

GRANDDAUGHTER - Ouch!
