Homophones in English

In the previous lesson, we studied the words two, to, and too. These words are homophones, words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings. There are many homophones in English. The following is a list of some common homophones in English.

ate - past tense of "eat"
eight - 8

buy - to get something by paying money
by - near, next to, or using something
bye - a word said when you leave

see - to look at something with your eyes
sea - a large body of salt water

four - 4
for - used to show purpose or who receives something        

here - in this place
hear - to notice a sound

hour - a period of 60 minutes
our - belonging to us

knew - past tense of "know"
new - not old

know - to have information or understanding
no - used to give a negative answer

son - a male child
sun - the star that gives light and heat to the earth

they're - contraction of "they" and "are"
their - belonging to them
there - in that place

where - used to ask about a place
wear - to have clothes on your body

write - to make letters or words
right - correct or on the side opposite of left

 

Exercise - Homophones

Select the word that best completes the sentence.

1. I two sandwiches. I'm full!
   

2. Happy birthday! This present is you.
   

3. Where are Helen and Bob? at school.
   

4. I can the music.
   

5. I am going to a letter to my mother.
   

6. I can better with my glasses.
   

7. I'm going to that dress to the party.
   

8. My old car doesn't work. I need to buy a car.
   

9. We like to take children to the beach.
   

10. I have to go to the grocery store to some food.
   

 

Writing

Write sentences using a pair of homophones.

Example:
I knew the answer to the question.
I bought a new dress.
