Plurals in English

Plurals in English

To change words from singular to plural in English, we generally add the letter S to the end of the word, but there are exceptions. Study the rules below to learn how to form the plural in English.

How to form the plural in English

  1. General rule:
Add -s to the end of the word.

        book → books

  2. Words that end in -s, -ch, -sh, -x
Add -es. Some words ending in -o also follow this rule.

        class → classes
        box → boxes

  3. Words that end in a consonant + -y
Change the -y to -i and add -es.

        city → cities

  4. Words that end in -f or -fe
Change the -f or -fe to -ves.

        leaf → leaves
        wife → wives

  5. Irregular plurals in English
Some words do not follow the rules above and change completely in the plural:

        man → men
        woman → women
        child → children
