Common English Word Roots

A word root is a word part that can be combined with other word roots, prefixes or suffixes to form a new word. The following is a list of 10 common English word roots.

Exercise - Word roots

Combine a word root from the table above with the word part below to form the word.

1. The study of the earth is (-graphy).  

2. Something that you can hear is (-ble).  

3. Something that measures time is a (-meter).  

4. The story of a person's life is their (-graphy).  

5. Use the camera to take a (-graph).  

6. A machine that works by itself is (-matic).  

7. When a hotel has an empty room, they have a (-ancy).  

8. Something that is good is a (-fit).
