The Silent "e"

When a word ends with a vowel, a consonant, and then the letter "e", we don't pronounce the letter "e." In such words the "e" at the end indicates that the previous vowel has a "long sound." Vowels with long sounds "say their name" or are pronounced like the name of the letter (A, E, I, O, U).

cake - The vowel "a" says its name.
kite
- The vowel "i" says its name.
wrote
- The vowel "o" says its name.
tube
- The vowel "u" says its name.
